Situation with Iran: What’s next?

While awaiting what happens next in the situation with Iran, the intent of this article is to analyze the current situation as concisely as possible in light of the scriptures. The President of the United States claimed that regime change has been accomplished, then said that regime change was never a goal of the war [1]. Indeed, the Iranian regime persists, and still has capabilities that threaten the region [2]. The IDF Chief of Staff has indicated that military objectives in Iran are yet unfinished [3], while at the same time the Israeli Prime Minister insists that Israel’s objectives are aligned with those of the United States [4]. There essentially are two possible resolutions, for Iran to capitulate, or for there to be actual regime change [2].

If Deal is Made

In his book The Art of the Deal, the man who is now POTUS wrote, “I like making deals, preferably big deals. That’s how I get my kicks.” The personal insight given there is explanatory of actions made by the man who is now the U.S. head of state and commander-in-chief.  For a deal to be reached, Iran would have to capitulate superficially, that is, in word only, except that there be “guarantees”. Emphatically, it is unjustifiable and fundamentally wrong to be negotiating with terrorists. The regime is not a trustworthy group and is very sly about negotiations. Regardless of what happens, it is known from Ezekiel 38 that Iran (Persia) will still have hostility towards Israel.

If War Resumes

There have been statements from both sides that if there was a resumption of war, there would be targeting of energy infrastructure. It is important to distinguish between crude oil and natural gas. Crude oil is refined to fuels for automobiles, jet airplanes, and locomotives, while natural gas is used as fuel for electricity generation and heavy industries. The impact on gas prices is an issue of dissatisfaction in the United States where the populous is characterized by highly consumeristic lifestyles. It would likely be the U.S. administration’s intention that another round of attacks on an intensified scale would eventually, sooner than later, persuade the regime to again revisit negotiations and make a deal, superficial as such deal may be.

In Light of the Scriptures

The gross pride and mind games in the current situation with Iran goes to show that man is arrogant, fickle, and deceptive. Let us remember the root causes of war, which according to James 4:1 are selfish desires within the heart of man. The word that is used for selfish desires is “hedonon,” which is where we get our word “hedonism.” The word is also used in Luke 8:14 as the pleasures of this life, that can choke out the word of God as thorny vines can choke out seedlings. We all each have the personal responsibility to not let that happen in our own lives, because you have to wonder at the emphasis being placed on the pleasures of this life and the so-called “golden age.”
