The Central Bureau of Statistics this Wednesday published the population data for the Jewish year 5786, on the occasion of the Jewish new year, Rosh Hashanah.

The statistics show that at the end of 2024, Israel’s population stood at more than 10 million people. A troubling trend: the number of Israelis who left the country was greater than the number of new immigrants.

The population of Israelis was estimated at around 9.8 million people. Jews and others made up about 7.7 million residents (78.6% of all Israelis), and Arabs about 2.1 million residents (21.4% of all Israelis). In addition, the foreign population was estimated at about 260,900 residents.

In terms of birthrate, the annual growth rate of Israel’s population stood at 1.2%, compared to 1.6% in 2023.

Regarding the religious breakdown of the Jewish population over the age of 20: 42.7% defined themselves as non-religious and secular; 21.5% as “traditional, not very religious”; 12% as “traditional-religious”; 12% as religious; and 11.4% as ultra-Orthodox.

As for immigration to Israel, 31,000 people immigrated in 2024, compared to 46,000 in 2023. Emigration data shows that 82,800 Israelis left the country, compared to 55,300 in 2023, while 24,200 returned to Israel from abroad, compared to 27,800 in 2023.

As of 2023, 48,025 couples got married, and 15,283 couples divorced. The total fertility rate in Israel stands at 2.9 children per woman on average.

There are 2,979,400 private households and 2,330,800 nuclear families, with an average of 3.2 people per household.
