Lebanese president: Israel's retaliation for rocket fire showed its "aggressive" intentions

After three rockets were fired at Israel from his country, the Lebanese president said that Israel's retaliation showed the "aggressive, escalatory intentions” of the Jewish state.

Israel's airstrikes on targets in southern Lebanon came in response to rockets shot from its northern neighbor, one of which caused a massive brush fire in the midst of a heat wave.

“Israel’s use of its air force to target Lebanese villages is the first of its kind since 2006 and indicates the presence of aggressive, escalatory intentions in the midst of ongoing threats against Lebanon and its sovereignty," Lebanese President Michel Aoun said.

“What happened is a flagrant and dangerous violation of (United Nations) Security Council Resolution 1701 and a direct threat to security and stability in the south,” Aoun said.

The Israeli military said that the rockets were believed to have been fired by Palestinian terror groups based in southern Lebanon.
