Israel slams UN-affiliated report declaring Gaza famine: ‘Fabricated to fit Hamas’ fake campaign’

Israel: Report ignores ‘massive influx of aid’ in recent weeks, ‘based on Hamas lies’

The Israeli Foreign Ministry and the IDF firmly rejected a UN-linked global hunger monitor’s report on Thursday that, for the first time, declared famine had broken out in parts of the Gaza Strip.

The report was published by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) and alleges that an estimated 514,000 people in Gaza are experiencing famine, projecting the number to rise to 641,000 by the end of September.

The Foreign Ministry quickly condemned the report in extremely harsh terms, directly accusing it of lying and serving Hamas’ propaganda campaign.

“The IPC has just published a ‘tailor-made’ fabricated report to fit Hamas’s fake campaign.”

“Unbelievably, the IPC twisted its own rules and ignored its own criteria just to produce false accusations against Israel: the IPC changed its own global standard, cutting the 30% threshold to 15% for this report only, and totally ignoring its second criterion of death rate, solely to serve Hamas’s fake campaign,” the ministry charged.

The new report is the first time that the IPC declared a full-blown famine, after warning of this scenario in several preceding reports. It said that the hunger was caused by the fighting, as well as Israel’s alleged aid blockade, and the displacement of Gazans.

The Foreign Ministry further noted that the report was based on “Hamas lies laundered through organizations with vested interests,” and added: “There is no famine in Gaza.”

Along with the IDF unit responsible for coordinating the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza (COGAT), the Foreign Ministry emphasized that the report completely ignored the recent surge of food deliveries.

“Over 100,000 trucks of aid have entered Gaza since the start of the war, and in recent weeks a massive influx of aid has flooded the Strip with staple foods and caused a sharp decline in food prices, which have plummeted in the markets.”

“The laws of supply and demand don’t lie – the IPC does. Every forecast the IPC has made regarding Gaza during the war has proven baseless and completely false. This assessment too will be thrown into the despicable trash bin of political documents.”

In its own statement, COGAT “categorically” rejected the IPC’s allegations.

“The report deliberately disregards data that was provided to its authors in a meeting held prior to its publication, and completely overlooks the efforts made in recent weeks to stabilize the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.”

COGAT commander, Maj.-Gen. Ghassan Alian, said the report was based “on partial and unreliable sources, many of them affiliated with Hamas, and blatantly ignores the facts and the extensive humanitarian efforts” by Israel.

“Instead of providing a professional, neutral, and responsible assessment, the report adopts a biased approach riddled with severe methodological flaws, thereby undermining its credibility and the trust the international community is able to place in it.”

Alian urged the international community to show responsibility and “not be swept away by false narratives and unfounded propaganda, but rather to examine the complete data and the facts on the ground.”

The IPC is a collaboration between 21 groups, including UN agencies, the World Health Organization, and various NGOs and other human rights groups and agencies.

Responding to the report, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk, a long-time critic of Israel, said “it is a war crime to use starvation as a method of warfare.”

UN Secretary-General António Guterres said, “We cannot allow this situation to continue with impunity” and called for “an immediate ceasefire, the immediate release of all hostages, and full, unfettered humanitarian access.”
