IDF searching for unidentified object after suspected drone alert in Galilee
The Israel Defense Forces is investigating a suspected drone infiltration from Lebanon after sirens sounded in the Western Galilee on Saturday evening, but by Sunday, the military had yet to locate the unidentified aerial object or determine what it was.
Security camera footage from the area appears to show an object rising into the sky near the border before suddenly disappearing from view, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the incident. The alert was the first of its kind in the region in several months.
In a statement issued just before midnight on Saturday, the IDF said, "Following the alert activated at 7:57 p.m. in Arab al-Aramshe, IDF observation posts identified an unidentified aerial object near the border with Lebanon. IDF forces are continuing searches in the area. So far, no unusual findings have been discovered. There are no special instructions for civilians."
Despite the lack of confirmed findings, reports from the area indicated that the IDF had deployed ground forces, supported by helicopters, to search for possible infiltrators in Adamit, Arab al-Aramshe, Ya'ara, Goren, Hanita, Shlomi, Gesher Haziv, Sa'ar, Kabri, Avdon, Betzet, Liman, Nahariya, Evron, Ben Ami, Matzuba and Rosh Hanikra.
Civilian special response teams remained on high alert on Sunday morning, while residents were advised to resume their normal routines but remain vigilant and prepared to respond to an emergency at short notice.
Moshe Davidovich, head of the Mateh Asher Regional Council and chairman of the Confrontation Line Forum, said local emergency teams and security coordinators had responded throughout the night.
"Emergency teams and local security coordinators were updated and operated throughout the night," he said. "Following a situation assessment, it was decided to return to routine, alongside continued security operations and the presence of checkpoints."
Davidovich also said he had contacted the commander of the IDF’s Northern Command to demand answers about the incident:
“We are aware of the questions raised by the incident, and because of the lack of clarity, I urgently contacted the Northern Command commander this morning to demand an immediate meeting with me and all the heads of the frontline local authorities, to receive a full, clear and unequivocal investigation into the incident."
Natan P., a member of a civilian special response team in the community of Migdal Ha’Emek, told ALL ISRAEL NEWS that he doubted an infiltration would occur this time but said he and his teammates remained ready to respond if necessary.
“It’s good to have alerts like this periodically,” he said. “I don’t enjoy it and my boss is not happy that I took a few hours off from work today to go on patrols instead, but we need to have things like this sometimes so that we don’t get complacent. An actual infiltration like what happened on October 7th down on the Gaza border could happen here and we need to be ready if it does. The only way you get ready for something like that is to do realistic training and practice.”
When asked about the suspected drone and the footage that appeared to show the object disappearing in mid-air, Natan called it “very strange” but said he did not believe it was a new Hezbollah weapon.
“Are we in a Star Trek movie here?” he rhetorically asked. “Did the Klingons send a drone at us with a cloaking device”? C’mon! Stuff happens."
"Maybe the camera was just pointing at a strange angle, so it doesn’t really catch what happened. We’ve got plenty of real problems here without worrying about a Klingon invasion,” he said.
