Central Elections committee meets to discuss requests to disqualify parties ahead of elections
The Central Elections Committee has begun a series of hearings on requests to disqualify party lists and candidates ahead of the October 27 elections for the 26th Knesset.
The committee will discuss several disqualification motions brought by various parties ahead of the elections, targeting both individuals and party slates over the next two days.
Right-wing Jewish parties, such as Jewish Power, the Likud party, and the Choose Life Forum have petitioned to bar the Islamist Ra’am party, and two members of the Joint List, Balad chairman Sami Abu Shehadeh, as well as Hadash MK Ofer Cassif.
In return, petitions have been filed to disqualify the Jewish Power party, the Democrats, and the joint Religious Zionism-Zehut listing intended to help both parties reach the electoral threshold.
Any disqualification of an individual candidate will require the approval of the Supreme Court, and disqualification of a party can also be appealed to the court.
