Two Israelis were shot and killed at the Allenby border crossing with Jordan on Thursday afternoon, Israeli media reported.

The gunman was a Jordanian citizen who was employed by the Jordanian military to drive a humanitarian aid truck that was bound for the Gaza Strip, security sources told the media.

The victims were treated at the scene while in serious condition, but succumbed to their wounds. They were identified as two men of about 60 and 20 years old, respectively.

The border crossing was closed after the attack. The Allenby Bridge Crossing is located east of the city of Jericho, in the Jordan Valley.

Two emergency responders of Magen David Adom (MDA) recounted their arrival at the scene: “We arrived at the scene with large forces and linked up with the security forces at the crossing. They led us to two men who were unconscious with gunshot wounds to their bodies, while initial medical treatment was being administered. We continued the medical efforts, including performing resuscitation, but unfortunately, at the end of the process, we had to pronounce them dead.”

Army Radio confirmed that the terrorist arrived at the crossing from the Jordanian side, driving a humanitarian aid truck, dozens of which are currently crossing the border into Israel every day.

The terrorist entered the cargo terminal on the Israeli side of the border and opened fire before reaching the inspection zone.

According to Army Radio, he then also stabbed his victims before a security guard stationed at the crossing arrived, shooting and killing the terrorist.

Channel 12’s Amit Segal noted the humanitarian effort is being organized by the Jordanian military, indicating that the driver could be a soldier. However, The Times of Israel cited security officials who denied the terrorist was an active soldier.

The Jordanian General Intelligence Directorate told Qatar’s Al-Arabi channel that the attack “was carried out outside the Jordanian border,” and that Jordan has not yet closed the border on its side.

Jordanian Government Spokesman, Mohammad Al-Momani, stated: “We are monitoring the reports surrounding a security incident on the other side of the Allenby Crossing.”

Almost exactly a year ago, three Israelis were killed in an almost similar attack at Allenby Crossing.

In that incident, three workers were shot by a Jordanian truck driver, a former soldier, who hid a weapon in his vehicle and began firing once he reached the Israeli side of the crossing. Security guards shot the terrorist, killing him.
