Pray urgently for Jordan’s Christians — King Abdullah II vows justice for 9 dead, 40 wounded in terror attack on church
All churches in Jordan will be closed for the next few days as security forces and intelligence officials try to figure out if more attacks are planned and by whom.
Christian conferences and other gatherings have been canceled or postponed out of an abundance of caution.
To his credit, Jordan’s King Abdullah II immediately condemned the attack, vowed to bring those responsible to justice, and went to visit a hospital where wounded and traumatized Christians were being treated.
“Those who imagined that treacherous bullets could divide Jordanians have been thwarted by our resilience and unity,” the Muslim monarch said, vowing harsh retaliation.
My wife and I are grieving the brazen and wicked terror attack targeting Christians gathered at a funeral service being held at the St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Hamoud, in the Karak province in southern Jordan on Friday.
The death toll has risen to nine, reports the Jordan Times.
At least 40 more are wounded, some severely.
ISIS quickly claimed responsibility.
We have been in contact with Jordanian Christians that we know.
They are in pain and in shock.
This was the biggest and deadliest attack on Jordanian Christians in living memory and no one is sure what will happen next.
Why was this church targeted?
Was it the beginning of a wave of more attacks?
Did Jordanian security services miss warning signs?
I ask you to please pray urgently for all of Jordan’s Christians — for their comfort and protection — and for the healing of all those wounded in the attack.
Please also pray for the King and his advisors to have the wisdom to know how to protect not only the Christians but the entire nation.
“We will confront the terrorist act that targeted Karak with the harshest penalties,” the king wrote on X. “And whoever imagines that the bullets of treachery can divide the ranks of Jordanians will fail in his endeavor before our steadfastness and unity.”
“All Jordanians, from the north of the homeland to its south, are partners in the land and the stance, and no treachery will penetrate between them. Our deepest condolences to the families of the martyrs, and our wishes for recovery to the wounded.”
The King concluded: “The blood of Jordanians is precious, and we will strike with an iron fist against anyone who oversteps against this country.”
