Netanyahu asks – How could US still be rushing to sign 'flawed' nuclear deal with Iran after Tehran launched missiles at American facility?

Former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took to Twitter to decry the “desperate rush” to sign a deal that will help Iran obtain nuclear weapons – even after it took responsibility for a missile attack on the U.S. consulate complex in Irbil on Sunday.

“Yesterday Iran fired missiles into the vicinity of the American consulate in Iraq and yet the U.S. continues to charge ahead along with the other powers to sign a nuclear agreement that will give the ayatollahs a nuclear arsenal,” he said in a video. “It would also relieve sanctions and give them hundreds of billions of dollars in order to continue the terror that they waged yesterday and wage every day throughout the Middle East and the world.”

“The desperate rush to sign this flawed nuclear agreement with Iran is not only absurd, it's downright dangerous,” Netanyahu said.

Netanyahu and former President Donald Trump were of the same mind regarding how to approach the Iranian nuclear threat. Trump pulled the U.S. out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2018, but President Joe Biden had vowed during the campaign to revive the deal.

After Biden took office, talks began and have been ongoing in Vienna to renegotiate a deal which seemed rather imminent in the last week – and it does not seem to bode well for Israel. Under the terms of the revived deal, Iran would have enough enriched uranium in three years and have the ICBMs to deliver them to America, Netanyahu warned.

“It endangers not only my country Israel, but your country the United States and the entire world,” he said. “We should not let an aggressive, rogue terrorist regime like Iran have nuclear weapons.”

The missile launch on Sunday near the American facility came even as Tehran is in the final stages of negotiating a revival of a nuclear deal with the United States. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) took credit saying it was aiming at an Israeli “strategic center of conspiracy and mischiefs of the Zionists.”

The attack was in retaliation for an air strike in Syria last week that killed two Iranians. The IRGC said that Israel “will pay for this crime.”

“Guard colonels Ehsan Karbalaipour and Morteza Saidnejad were martyred – as crime committed by the Zionist regime during a rocket attack in the suburbs of Damascus, Syria, yesterday morning,” the IRGC said.

On Sunday, up to 12 missiles were fired at the U.S. consulate in the city from neighboring Iran, a U.S. official said.

The U.S. State Department condemned the strike, calling it “an outrageous violation of Iraq’s sovereignty."

“No U.S. facilities were damaged or personnel injured, and we have no indications the attack was directed at the United States,” the statement said. “Iran must immediately cease its attacks, respect Iraqi sovereignty, and halt its interference in Iraq’s internal affairs. The United States stands with our Iraqi partners, including in the Kurdistan Region, and will help our partners in the region defend themselves.”
