Israel's Supreme Court rules that fines slapped on protestors during COVID lockdowns last year were illegal
Fines that were doled out for violating COVID restrictions during protests against former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu were deemed illegal by the High Court of Justice.
Israeli media reported that the fines given in October were illegal since the demonstrations themselves were legal during the lockdown, the Supreme Court said.
Protests were allowed even during the fall lockdown that extended from September through October last year. During that time, some 39,000 fines were given and only 17,000 paid. The government has been ordered to return the money to those who paid – 11 million shekels.
