For the third straight day fire crews continue fighting Jerusalem forest fires

Massive wildfires in the forests around Jerusalem restarted yesterday afternoon after authorities thought that the situation was under control. Firefighting crews and airplanes were able to contain the spread of the fires that potentially endangered the Haddasah Ein Kerem hospital. The hospital did not need to evacuate patients.

Fire crews and volunteers in the moshavim (villages) also worked through the night to extinguish hotspots that flared up. A group of volunteers in the village of Shoresh reported that during the night they put out over 20 small fires near the entrance to the village.

Even though most of the fires are under control, there is fear that the winds could up again in the afternoon and rekindle more fires. Already 20,000 dunams (5,000 acres) have been burned making it one of the largest forest fires in Israel's history.
