Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at the opening of the government meeting that Hamas may attempt attacks ahead of Israel’s elections in an effort to influence the vote. Israel’s election is scheduled for Oct. 27.
“Precisely because Hamas is so weak, it will try to challenge us with its remaining forces ahead of the elections,” Netanyahu said, adding that Israel is prepared to thwart such attempts and would respond with “tremendous force.”
Defense Minister Israel Katz also said he instructed the IDF to increase its alert level following intelligence indicating that Hamas may attempt attacks against Israeli forces in Gaza around election day.
