Colombia opens embassy in Jerusalem, keeping promise by new president
Colombia officially opened its Jerusalem embassy today, in a ceremony attended by Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar and Colombian Foreign Minister Omar Bula Escobar.
“This is an important date for the State of Israel. It’s also an important date for the city of Jerusalem,” Sa’ar said during the opening ceremony.
During the events, Minister Sa’ar signed the guestbook for the new embassy, alongside his Colombian counterpart Escobar, followed by Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Leon and Israeli Ambassador to Colombia Vivian Aisen, who were also in attendance.
In July, Colombia’s new president, Abelardo de la Espriella, promised to move the embassy to Jerusalem, making a sharp break from his predecessor, Gustavo Petro, who was highly critical of the Jewish State.
On Tuesday, the two nations announced that they had restored their free trade agreement, which had been cancelled by Petro.
