New COVID strain – Delta AY3 – detected in Israel
Israeli health officials said that they have detected 10 cases of a new strain in the country that could be more dangerous and contagious than the Delta.
The variant, labeled the AY3 – a mutation of Delta – and has been found in several countries, including the U.S. The Israeli cases have been detected in eight people returning from abroad and two within the country, according to Hebrew media.
Some experts say it is too early to tell whether the strain is more dangerous than Delta.
This new mutation comes during Israel's fourth COVID wave. Almost 8,000 new infections were tallied on Wednesday with a slightly lower positive rate of 5.5%. Serious cases climbed to over 600.
