Pres. Herzog set for official visit to Ethiopia, strategic cooperation on agenda

Israeli President Isaac Herzog is scheduled to arrive in Ethiopia on Wednesday for an official visit, his spokesperson said. During the trip, he will meet with President Taye Atske Selassie, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, and leaders of the Beta Israel Jewish community.

The visit comes amid Israel’s recent recognition of neighboring Somaliland, with whom Ethiopia is cooperating closely. A 2024 strategic memorandum of understanding granted landlocked Ethiopia access to Somaliland's Red Sea port of Berbera, which is being developed with support from the United Arab Emirates.

Herzog's office described the visit as “a significant milestone in deepening cooperation between Israel and Ethiopia, as well as broader engagement with African nations,” noting that Ethiopia recently hosted African leaders at the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa.
