Liberman seeks vote to replace Knesset speaker as early as Tuesday’s swearing-in
Yisrael Beytenu chairman Avigdor Liberman has begun collecting signatures to request a vote on replacing Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana as early as the new Knesset’s swearing-in ceremony next Tuesday.
Under Israeli law, the speaker is required to convene a discussion on his replacement before the new government is sworn in, although the process could potentially take several months.
About a month ago, Ohana said that replacing him would be legitimate if 61 Knesset members supported the move.
A March 2020 Supreme Court ruling, known as the Edelstein-Gantz precedent, established that when a majority of Knesset members demand such a vote, the speaker must convene the plenum promptly.
