Washington reportedly opposes renewal of UNIFIL mandate in southern Lebanon
Washington opposes renewing the mandate of the UNIFIL peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon, a U.S. State Department official told Lebanese newspaper Nidaa al-Watan.
The official said the issue had been raised during recent U.S.-mediated talks in Rome between Israeli and Lebanese delegations, and that both sides agreed to work with Washington on alternatives under their framework agreement.
Other U.S. sources cited by the newspaper questioned UNIFIL’s effectiveness, saying there was no need for an international presence that amounted to “a witness who saw nothing,” but rather for concrete international guarantees to support implementation of any future agreement.
