US strikes ISIS bases in Nigeria after attacks on Christians
The United States carried out a missile strike overnight against ISIS targets in Nigeria, President Donald Trump announced, saying the attack was in response to the group’s assaults on Christians.
The strike involved the launch of more than a dozen Tomahawk missiles from a U.S. Navy vessel at two ISIS bases in Sokoto State in northwestern Nigeria, near the Niger border. U.S. military officials said the operation was coordinated with the Nigerian army.
The targets were linked to ISIS-Sahel, which has carried out attacks on civilians. The strike followed repeated warnings from the Trump administration amid pressure from evangelical Christian groups in the United States to act against the killing and persecution of Christians in Nigeria.
