Ultra-Orthodox party’s withdrawal over IDF draft law paralyzes Knesset education and health committees
Knesset Education and Health committees have been largely paralyzed for nearly two months since their Shas-affiliated chairs resigned. Knesset legal adviser Sagit Afik warned Coalition Chair Ofir Katz that new chairs must be appointed immediately, saying the situation is harming the work of both the committees and the Knesset as a whole.
The paralysis stems from the coalition’s decision to keep the posts vacant for Shas until the party decides whether to return to the coalition. Opposition MK Moshe Kinley Tur-Paz, who heads an alternative Education Committee, criticized the move, saying key committees cannot be frozen or run on a “rotation” basis due to coalition infighting, and accused the coalition of prioritizing political survival over proper parliamentary work.
