Turkey, Azerbaijan criticize Israel for recognition of Armenian Genocide

The Knesset unanimously approved Israel’s official recognition of the Armenian Genocide on Sunday.

Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar called the move “a moral and historical duty,” noting previous efforts and statements that did not come to fruition despite appeals from Israel’s Armenian community.

The move drew immediate criticism from Turkey’s Foreign Ministry, which called it “malicious” and “politically motivated.”

On Monday, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry called the recognition “a distortion of the historical facts” in a post on X, saying it would “undermine” regional peace and security efforts.

Sa’ar told the Knesset he received a letter of appreciation on Friday from the Armenian Church and Jerusalem community for the initiative, adding that 32 countries have recognized the Armenian Genocide.
