Top Board of Peace envoy lands in after failed Hamas disarmament talks in Cairo
Nickolay Mladenov, lead envoy for the Board of Peace, arrived in Israel after talks with Hamas in Cairo, where the group rejected a proposal to gradually disarm, Israeli media said on Monday.
After weeks of negotiations, Hamas instead submitted a counter-proposal that discussions about its disarmament be part of a larger process geared toward the establishment of a Palestinian state.
Mladenov is now meeting Israeli officials to discuss next steps, as Israel weighs resuming war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip amid stalled disarmament efforts, officials said following a security cabinet meeting on Sunday.
