Board of peace weapons buyback to offer thousands for surrendered arms
The Board of Peace is formulating a plan under which anyone in Gaza who hands over their weapons and commits to abandoning terrorism would receive financial compensation, Kan News reported Tuesday night.
Under the framework, which remains under development, a “weapons buyback” initiative would be offered to individuals prepared to give up their arms, renounce violence, and submit to future oversight. Officials estimate that those who turn in weapons would receive thousands of dollars and become eligible for a broader rehabilitation program that is also being prepared.
Both U.S. President Donald Trump’s 20-point plan and the 15-point document reached with Hamas include provisions regarding weapons possession under Palestinian law, which requires all firearms — including pistols — to be licensed. The initiative is expected to focus primarily on collecting Kalashnikov rifles.
The Peace Council is seeking international funding, especially from Gulf countries, to finance the weapons-disarmament effort.
