Syrian president: Security deal with Israel could pave way for peace, without giving up Golan

Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa said Syria is working toward a security agreement with Israel that could pave the way for broader peace, while insisting Damascus will not relinquish its claim to the Golan Heights.

In an interview with Al Jazeera, portions of which were released ahead of its full broadcast, al-Sharaa said Syria has no interest in a military confrontation with Israel and is pursuing the proposed agreement in coordination with other countries. He stressed, however, that any future peace would not come at the expense of what he called Syria's rights in the "occupied Golan."
