Starting February, mobile phones to be banned in Israeli elementary schools

Education Minister Yoav Kisch announced a new policy Thursday under which mobile phones will be banned in elementary schools starting in February.

Under the plan, phones may only be used during designated lessons in which staff authorize supervised, educational use. Students will still be allowed to bring their phones to school, but the devices must remain inside their bags.

Phone use will also be prohibited during recess and in all public areas of the school, including entrances and exits.

The Education Ministry will determine disciplinary measures for violations — ranging from warnings to confiscation of devices. Kisch added that the ministry is also considering extending the policy to middle schools in the future.
