US military commanders warn Hegseth against expanding Iran war - report
Senior U.S. military commanders warned War Secretary Pete Hegseth that expanding the war with Iran could weaken the military’s ability to confront threats elsewhere and defend the U.S. homeland, The Washington Post reported.
According to the report, commanders from U.S. European, Southern and Pacific commands, as well as Navy leadership, raised concerns in a document after identifying plans to extend the deployment of forces to the Middle East. While expressing disagreement with the decision, they said they would carry out Hegseth’s orders.
The report said personnel and equipment from commands responsible for Europe, Asia and Latin America have been redirected to support operations against Iran, limiting their ability to carry out missions in their own regions. Army and Air Force commanders reportedly support extending the deployments but have warned of significant risks.
Hegseth spokesman Sean Parnell said decisions on the scale and duration of deployments are based on current threat assessments, the president’s strategic priorities and recommendations from senior military leadership.
