Protests expand in Iran as government declares “energy emergency”

Iran’s wave of unrest entered a third day as protests spread from commercial centers to symbolic and strategic sites, including university campuses, major markets, and central squares in Tehran and beyond.

The demonstrations are accompanied by a broad economic strike, with many shops in bazaars and shopping districts closed in protest over the cost of living and the collapse of the local currency.

While Iranian officials have adopted a relatively conciliatory tone — acknowledging public hardship and calling for dialogue — security forces continue heavy enforcement on the ground, with reports of violence against protesters. The government also announced widespread closures of public institutions in Tehran and some 20 other provinces, officially citing an energy emergency, a move widely seen as an effort to curb protest momentum.
