On 31st anniversary of Rabin assassination, Herzog warns against political violence
President Isaac Herzog marked the 31st anniversary of Yitzhak Rabin’s assassination on Thursday with a warning against political violence as Israel approaches upcoming elections.
Calling the 1995 assassination a "warning sign for generations," Herzog cautioned political leaders and citizens alike against inflammatory rhetoric.
"Words kill!" he said at the Mount Herzl memorial service. "I call upon the candidates, leaders, opinion formers, and all citizens of Israel: be careful with your words."
"There is no place for political violence in a proper state," Herzog said. "If we give it space and ignore it, we will jeopardize our very existence."
Rabin was murdered by far-right extremist Yigal Amir, whom Herzog emphasized must remain in prison for life without pardon.
