Netanyahu meets Greek PM Mitsotakis at UN, discusses defense and energy cooperation
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Thursday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, with the two leaders discussing efforts to deepen strategic cooperation between Israel and Greece.
Netanyahu emphasized the importance of the countries’ strategic partnership for regional stability and welcomed Greece’s selection of Israeli defense systems.
The meeting follows a significant expansion in defense ties between the two countries. In August, Israel and Greece signed an approximately €3 billion agreement under which Israeli companies will supply a multi-layered air defense network known as “Achilles Shield.” The system will incorporate David’s Sling, SPYDER and BARAK MX, among other Israeli technologies.
Netanyahu and Mitsotakis also discussed regional developments and energy cooperation, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
The leaders additionally discussed advancing another trilateral summit between Israel, Greece and Cyprus. The three countries have developed a strategic partnership encompassing energy, security, emergency response and other areas of regional cooperation.
