Netanyahu announces recognition of Somaliland as independent state
In a video released by his office, Netanyahu is seen signing the recognition during a video call with Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi. The Prime Minister’s Office said Israel will move to expand ties with Somaliland, including cooperation in agriculture, health, technology and the economy.
Netanyahu described the move as a “historic friendship” and invited the Somaliland president to visit Israel.
Following the announcement, the foreign ministers of Egypt, Somalia and Turkey condemned the decision, warning it could undermine Somalia’s sovereignty and regional stability.
