Knesset votes to keep mandatory military service at 32 months until 2029
The Knesset has given final approval to legislation keeping mandatory military service at 32 months through 2029, delaying a planned reduction to 30 months.
Under the new law, the shortened 30-month service will apply only to those drafted in June 2029, who are expected to be discharged in January 2032. The bill passed by a vote of 43-12, with one abstention.
The explanatory notes to the legislation state that extending compulsory service is necessary to help the Israel Defense Forces meet its operational and security needs. Earlier this month, a senior IDF official said the military ideally requires 36 months of mandatory service, describing 32 months as the minimum needed to avoid worsening the current manpower shortage.
