Knesset approves Torah study Basic Law in first reading
The Knesset approved the proposed Basic Law: Torah Study in its first reading, with 63 lawmakers voting in favor and 53 against.
The bill seeks to grant full-time Torah students rights equivalent to those afforded to military service members. Ultra-Orthodox parties had insisted that the legislation receive the backing of at least 61 Knesset members, a threshold the proposal ultimately surpassed.
