‘Jerusalem is not Constantinople’, Katz tells Turkish minister who dreams of governing Jerusalem

Israel's Minister of Defense Israel Katz responded sharply after Turkey’s interior minister called for Jerusalem to come under Turkish rule in a post on X on Sunday.

“Jerusalem is not Constantinople,” Katz said, adding that while Jerusalem has been the capital of the Jewish people for 3,000 years and will remain so, the Ottoman Empire has “collapsed and will never return.”

The response came after Turkey’s Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi said over the weekend that his “heartfelt plea to the Almighty” was to be granted “the governorship of Jerusalem, even if just for a single day,” adding he hoped to witness the “liberation of Jerusalem,” like that of Damascus, Aleppo and Karabakh, under President Tayyip Erdoğan, whom he called a “world leader.”

“You are working to drag Turkey back into a dark and backward era,” Katz hit back.
