Italy: 9 arrested on suspicion of raising millions of euros for Hamas

Italian police on Saturday arrested nine people suspected of raising millions of euros for Hamas under the guise of fundraising for Palestinians in Gaza. Arrest warrants were also issued for two additional suspects believed to be outside Italy.

Law enforcement officials said the suspects helped funnel around €7 million to organizations operating in the Palestinian territories or Israel that are controlled by or linked to Hamas.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said those arrested include Mohammed Hannon, head of the Association of Palestinians in Italy, whom investigators described as the “leader of Hamas’ Italian cell.” Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi said the investigation exposed activities that were presented as humanitarian aid but in fact concealed support for Islamist organizations.
