Israel’s attorney general warns Education Ministry: Planned increase in yeshiva funding without oversight is illegal
Officials from the Attorney General’s Office have warned the Education Ministry that its plan to increase funding for yeshivas whose students are exempt from military service — without proper oversight — is unlawful, as it would be impossible to distinguish how much support goes to exempt students versus those who are draft-eligible.
The letter, sent Wednesday by Deputy Attorney General Gil Limon, specifically addresses the ministry’s move to raise budget allocations for yeshivas with foreign students — who are not Israeli citizens and therefore not subject to the draft.
