Israeli FM to push official recognition of Armenian genocide
Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar announced his intention to present a proposed resolution for the Israeli government’s official recognition of the Armenian Genocide at its next meeting.
“Recognizing the genocide perpetrated against the Armenian people in the final years of the Ottoman Empire is both a moral and historical duty,” Sa’ar said in a post on X made Thursday evening. He added that the resolution would then be brought before the Knesset for a vote.
Sa’ar said Israel must “firmly condemn any denial, minimization, or distortion of the historical truth.”
On Armenian Genocide Memorial Day in April, the Chancellor of the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem warned Israel that lack of recognition emboldens aggressors, adding that the Turkish president has expressed ambitions to conquer Jerusalem.
