Iran leader Khamenei buried in Mashhad after nearly week-long funeral procession

Iran's former supreme leader Ali Khamenei was buried in the Shiite holy city of Mashhad in northern Iran on Thursday evening.

The burial ended the funeral procession that began last Friday and led through Tehran, Qom, and the Shiite holy cities in Iraq before reaching Mashhad, Khamenei's hometown.

Khamenei was killed at the end of February in the opening salvo of the U.S.-Israeli air campaign against the regime, after ruling the regime with an iron fist for some 37 years.

Regime officials had threatened the U.S. and Israel not to strike Iranian targets during the procession, though the U.S. conducted two rounds of airstrikes after the regime attacked ships in the Hormuz Strait.
