Indian pilot Smit Machchhar was seriously wounded Wednesday during what was described as a struggle with the flight’s Omani co-pilot, who allegedly attempted to seize control of the Flydubai aircraft and crash it with its passengers on board.

Indian media hailed Machchhar as a national hero, crediting him with preventing the aircraft from crashing and saving the lives of those on board.
