High Court freezes state comptroller’s probe into Israel’s Oct. 7 failures

Israel’s Supreme Court on Wednesday issued an interim order freezing State Comptroller Matanyahu Englman’s work on several reports dealing with IDF failures surrounding the October 7 massacre.

The decision, issued in response to a petition by the military defense, requires the comptroller to justify his authority to investigate the issues and explain how he safeguards due process and personal accountability. The freeze applies to reports on intelligence and policy failures before October 7, events on the day of the attack, the Nova festival, civilian defense in the south, Hamas financing, and related areas.

The Military Defense welcomed the ruling, saying it underscores the need to protect the rights of IDF personnel. The October Council, representing bereaved families, also praised the decision, arguing the failures of October 7 require a full state commission of inquiry with broad investigative powers.
