Helicopter carrying Iranian president and foreign minister crashes, intense search underway
A helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi crashed in the border region with Azerbaijan on Sunday evening, Iranian media reported.
Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and several religious and political officials were reportedly on their way back from a visit to the neighboring country when the connection to the aircraft was reported lost due to bad weather.
Large forces continue to search for the helicopter, Iranian media outlets reported. Authorities were “still hopeful,” even though information coming from the crash site was “very concerning,” an Iranian official told Reuters, adding that the passengers’ lives are “at risk.”
The semi-official Fars news outlet urged Iranian citizens to pray for Raisi and official TV channels carried prayers for his safety.
