Hamas shifts much of its leadership activity from Qatar to Turkey - report

Hamas has transferred much of its organizational activity from Qatar to Turkey in recent months, according to the pro-Saudi newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat.

Three Hamas officials based outside Gaza told the newspaper that the group has resumed holding senior leadership meetings in Turkey after Qatar had served for years as the primary hub for leadership meetings and internal elections. According to the report, Hamas's recent inconclusive election for the head of its political bureau was held in Istanbul.

The report also said Hamas is seeking closer ties with Syria's new government, which is backed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
