Hamas’ Gaza leader says it will disarm only after a future Palestinian state is established
Hamas’ Gaza leader Khalil al-Hayya said the organization would be willing to hand over its weapons to a future “state” governing the Gaza Strip, but only after what he called “the end of the Israeli occupation.” His office later clarified to AFP that the reference is to a “future sovereign Palestinian state.” The statement added that the issue of weapons “remains under discussion with Palestinian factions and mediators,” and that the agreement is still in its early stages. Hamas also said it would accept UN forces as separation forces, border monitors and observers of the ceasefire in Gaza.
