Hamas postpones internal election for top political leadership
Hamas has postponed elections for the head of its political bureau, originally set for early January, citing security, political, and internal disputes, the pro-Saudi newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat reported Monday, quoting senior Hamas sources.
The group said the delay was partly due to its focus on negotiations over Phase Two of the Gaza ceasefire, as well as growing disagreements over internal arrangements in the Strip.
Hamas had planned to hold the vote in Gaza, Judea and Samaria, and abroad, but not in Israeli prisons. A source said organizing the process has been complicated by Israel’s tightened prison conditions, which have limited communications between jailed Hamas members.
