Government secretary urges advancement of bill to halt arrests of yeshiva draft evaders
Government Secretary Yossi Fuchs has urged Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee Chairman Boaz Bismuth to advance legislation aimed at preventing the arrest of yeshiva students who evade military service.
In a letter to Bismuth, Fuchs wrote that criminal enforcement would be suspended only for those proven to be full-time yeshiva students whose “Torah study is their occupation,” and not for ultra-Orthodox Israelis who are not enrolled in yeshivas. He added that the arrangement would include “effective oversight,” although it remains unclear how such a monitoring mechanism would operate.
