French PM vows legislation banning anti-Zionist expressions

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu stated last night (Thursday) that the country intends to lead legislation prohibiting expressions against Zionism, thereby making anti-Zionism a criminal offense. Lecornu made these remarks during the annual convention of the Representative Council of Jewish Institutions in France, as part of France's efforts to curb rising antisemitism in the country.

"We will place a bill on the parliamentary agenda as early as April that will criminalize anti-Zionist statements," the French leader announced. According to Lecornu, following the criminalization of antisemitism, "a further step is required, because calling for the destruction of Israel is a call for the destruction of an entire people, and to define oneself as an anti-Zionist is to challenge Israel's right to exist."
