Egypt will not join Mecca defense pact signed by Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan - report
Egypt is not expected to join the Mecca agreement signed by Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan, Egyptian sources told the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar.
According to the sources, Cairo has concerns about the mutual defense pact, particularly over what obligations a member state would face if an ally were attacked — including whether it would be required to provide military support or become involved in a conflict outside its territory.
The sources said those concerns have grown amid the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict and its impact on Gulf states and Jordan, warning that further escalation could turn political commitments under the pact into concrete military obligations.
