Egypt and Iran urge FIFA to cancel Pride events at their 2026 World Cup match in the US
Egypt and Iran are urging FIFA to intervene and block the planned Pride celebrations during their group-stage soccer match at the 2026 World Cup, scheduled for June 26 in Seattle.
The Egyptian Football Association sent a letter to FIFA Secretary-General Mattias Grafström demanding that the Pride events be canceled. Seattle had designated its first World Cup soccer match at Lumen Field as a “Pride Match” — the first in the tournament’s history — even though the fixture involves two countries where same-sex relations are illegal, and in Iran can carry the death penalty.
