Delay in Israel’s draft exemption law keeps Shas out of government this month
Ultra-Orthodox party Shas is not expected to return to the government before the end of the month, despite Justice Minister Yariv Levin agreeing to temporarily assume the party’s ministerial portfolios through year’s end. Shas cites slow progress on legislation granting exemptions from military service as the reason for its continued boycott.
Meanwhile, new committee chairs are expected to be appointed in the Knesset next week to replace Shas lawmakers who resigned, after the Knesset’s legal adviser warned coalition leaders that the education and health committees have been paralyzed for nearly two months and must be staffed immediately.
