Israeli Defense Ministry proposes extension of border communities’ evacuation until end of 2023
The Israeli Defense Ministry proposed an extension of the evacuation of the residents of communities close to the borders with Gaza and Lebanon until Dec. 31, local Israeli Kan news reported on Thursday morning.
The proposal would extend the ministry’s authority to evacuate communities up to 7 km (almost 4.5 miles) from the Gaza Strip, including the city of Ashkelon, and up to 5km (about 3 miles) from the Lebanese border.
The proposal also included an extension of cash payments for citizens who cannot or to do not want to be provided with a state-funded hotel room. The cost of extending the evacuations is estimated at several billion shekels.
Around 200,000 Israeli citizens have been ordered to evacuate their homes so far.
