China condemns Israel's recognition of Somaliland, rejects attempt to 'split territories' of Somalia
After widespread condemnation from the Arab world, China expressed its criticism of Israel's move to recognize the state of Somaliland on Monday.
China opposes any attempt to "split territories" in Somalia, the foreign ministry said, affirming China's support for the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of Somalia, which claims sovereignty over the region.
“No country should encourage or support other countries’ internal separatist forces for its own selfish interests,” a ministry spokesman said at a regular press conference.
Taiwan, which China sees as part of its country but which claims independence from the Communist People's Republic, was one of the few countries to welcome Israel's recognition of Somaliland.
