After Somaliland, southern Yemen separatists seek Israeli recognition
Forces in southern Yemen backed by the UAE and seeking independence have expressed hope that Israel will also recognize them, following Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, Kan News reported Sunday.
The comments were made in closed-door talks, with no official statement so far from the southern Yemeni separatists. Israeli cooperation with Somaliland — and potentially with pro-independence forces in southern Yemen — could significantly concern the Iran-backed Houthis in northern Yemen, as it would bring Israel closer geographically in the Red Sea arena.
In recent weeks, the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council has made notable gains on the ground against pro-Saudi forces, advancing its push for independence and fueling behind-the-scenes tensions between Riyadh and Abu Dhabi.
